Get your children into the kitchen: build a recipe for healthy habits

Teaching children to cook was one of the most rewarding parts of parenthood. It’s not just about putting food on the table, it is also about helping them develop life skills, making healthier decisions and being proud of their contributions. In addition, additional hands in the kitchen in a house with five children are a lifesaver!

We have converted the cooking into a fun family tradition. Each of my children has their own day to plan and do dinner, and while I am there to lead them, they can take the lead. Over time, they have started to learn and discover the basics of balanced food how to build meals that nourish their bodies. It is a process and you still need memories, but it was so worthwhile to grow your confidence.

Why teach children to cook affairs

Cooking is so much more than just a meal. It is about conveying skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. If you learn to cook, learn:

  • Make healthier decisions: Understanding what flows into your food helps you make better decisions.
  • Be confident and independent: It is astonishing to see your pride when you make a meal for the family.
  • Stay safe and clean: As you practice, you will learn how to deal with knives, ovens and other tools and keep things hygienic.

Every child has an evening for dinner in our house. It is your time to shine and you love to have freedom to choose what to do. If one of my children wants to make a dish like Tacos or pasta, we talk about how to compensate for the food with vegetables, proteins and healthier swaps. It’s all about balance and the tools to make better decisions.


Our formula for healthy eating

One of the possibilities that I lead my children while cooking is to teach them ours Healthy nutritional formula. It is easy and helps you build meals that are both balanced and satisfying. Here is the collapse:

  • Protein feed: Always add a portion of protein, whether chicken, tofu, beans or fish.
  • Carbohydrate food: 1-2 portions of grains, potatoes or other carbohydrate sources.
  • Fat foods: 1-2 portions of food such as avocado, olive oil or nuts.
  • Vegetables: 1-2 handful of vegetables (I always encourage 2+!).

Most of what we eat is made from scratch, and over time my children have started to learn the options that fit in these categories. You still need a lot of memories (and that’s okay!), But you get the shoot.

How to enjoy learning is fun

Sometimes children learn best when they don’t even see that they learn. That is why we love the cooking and healthy nutritional games Culinaryschools.org. These games are an entertaining way to teach food concepts and to entertain my children.

As evaluated by my 9-year-old, these are their favorites:

  • Fast food fight: The players run to eat delicious fruits while avoiding eating foods that make them sick or slow down.
  • Fitness food run: is a horizontal game platform game that encourages players to eat healthy foods such as apples and cucumbers and at the same time avoid unhealthy foods such as fries.
  • Looney milks veggie patch: is a garden sandbox game in which children grow different fruit and vegetables and interact with animals and the environment at the same time.
  • Bunniculas Kaotian cuisine: is a simple recipe game in which children help bunnicula to cook unique dishes.

These games helped my children to build excitement about cooking and their knowledge of healthy eating. You have some games that are even suitable for preschool children. And the best thing about it? You have so much fun that you don’t even notice that you learn.

Let the children take over (and brighten your load!)

As a busy mother of five years, I learned that I can’t do everything. Between the school, the extra -curricular and everything else, it is not possible to cook every meal itself. It was a relief to teach my children to cook because they not only learn valuable skills, but also help to take part of the load from me.

As soon as your children have a certain confidence in the kitchen, it is a game-changer to bring them over the reins (with some instructions). In our family, every child knows their night of cooking. Sometimes it is chaotic and at the last minute (see last-minute-healthy dinner staples & concepts), but sometimes we are more organized. They plan the meal, produce a list of ingredients and even master most of the preparation and cooking. It is not perfect every time, but it is a great help – and they are so proud of themselves when the family enjoys their food.

If you try something new or need help, I often ask Chatgpt to simplify a recipe in steps that you can easily follow. It is like having a little helper in the kitchen and making the process for everyone smoother.

Family activities: fun at home

Food can be a pleasure, but some of our favorite family memories come from skipping the restaurant and the fun of staying at home. These nights are not just about eating, it is also about spending a lot of time together, learning new skills and experimenting in the kitchen for a great time.

Here are some of our preferred nights and family activities on the subject of themed and family activities:

  • Hot Pot Night: I bought a table top burner and we set up a hot pot in the middle of the table. Everyone had to choose their favorite ingredients for cooking, which makes it interactive and funny. This is what we did: mushroom hot pot.
  • Sushi rolling: We rolled sushi together several times and experimented with various vegetarian rolls. It is a practical activity that the children love and you can explore new flavors while practicing your assembly skills.
  • Pizzaartys: Pizza is a favorite in our house. We realize ourselves on funny coverings and have all your own personal pizzas produce. It’s easy and everyone gets exactly what they want. Here are some of my pizza recipes, although we usually make more traditional ones!
  • Buddha Schalen: Make-to-to-your-down Buddha shells are another great way to have children adapted to children and at the same time ensure that it is full of healthy options.
  • Back adventure: From homemade gingerbread houses to cookies, we had some messy but wonderful times together. While we generally try to avoid junk food, I occasionally let the children make treats. It keeps you excited for cooking and gives you an outlet to enjoy a sweet reward for your efforts.

These activities make cooking a family event rather than a annoying task. They have fun, committed and give the children the opportunity to take over their meals and at the same time learn valuable skills.

Cooking with children is not just about putting food on the table – it is about conveying skills, creating their self -confidence and creating memories that take a lifetime. By using tools such as our formula for healthy eating, exploring culinary games and taking over online games and taking over the leadership, my children learn how to create balanced, nutritious and delicious meals.
